Cured jumpy Gears

Postby Scooterchip on Mon Sep 21, 2009 12:57 pm

Hi all,

I have been having a problem where I can go from 1st to 2nd=ok, 2nd to third not ok seems to sit between gears, 3rd to 4th=ok, I tightened up the clutch cable and this cured it for a while, but came back again. So I adjusted yet again and is ok (for now), Previously I could feel the "bite" at about 5mm release of the lever now it's more like 20mm, is this normal? I have had no jumpy gear probs over the weekend and feel more confident to open her up in a few gears where as before it would sometimes jump out of gear.
(I replaced the cruciform on rebuild)

Fanks! :D :D :D

I was ever so careful when putting the gears back in, ie stacked them as they came out and zip tied them until I was ready to put them back in, it is ok now I was just wondering about how much you release the lever before clutch engages? are they all different?
and "shimming the box" just sounds rude, I get up to all sorts in my shed but that takes the biscuit!

Shimming the box: please discuss?

Table 2, Picture B item 19738 is the shim but on later models the gearbox has a shim either end 8)

If it was the clutch then it would jump when you release it if the basket/plates were worn.

Does it drag - does it want to pull when your sitting at still with the clutch in and you in gear.

or is it just difficult to select the gears.

what is the model and year?? and can you remember what the cruxiform looked like theres a few different types

Me, Exsoulagent,

It's a PX125 1979,

It does not drag, and stays still when I have the clutch in and in gear.
Gear selecting is easier now than it has ever been, I feel a big difference when changing down.
I matched the cruciform like for like at the shop I get all my bits from.
The two things I have done the past couple of weeks is: change the gear cables, and adjust the clutch.
So is about 20mm release of the lever before the scoot pulls away normal?

thanks guys

It will only have the one end shim then on a 79 p125x
Just adjust clutch until drag disappears
hard too say if 20mm is normal as every clutch is different on being disengaged .
New gear cables will stretch very quickly so best too check at the selector box and adjust if slack

Thanks Exsoulagent,

I have piddled around with the gear cables a couple of weeks ago and I have got it right (finally) everyone I talk to about gear cables say there is certainly a knack to it, and from recollection there was only one shim on the gears, so for now it is running nicely and I have learned a bit along the way, the gears don't clunk as much and that annoying problem of missing gears all over the place.

Cheers for all your help.
