PX strip down

Postby skyblue1 on Tue Nov 17, 2009 7:54 pm

Hi all
I'm helping a mate strip his PX for spraying. I've only done an old Sprint so not sure what issues I might have.
Is it easy enough to get leg shield trim off and then back on again?
Are those side panel levers easy to get out? I assume once the petrol tank is out you have easy access to them?
Petrol and Oil tank removal, is that pretty straight forward too?
And what about the front disk brake, anything to be careful of with the hydraulic reservoir?

Any tips welcome, I have advised him my heavy hammer and crow bars are ready!! :D
Cheers.

leg shield trim
if an original one
need to remove the headset and slide off up the way if remember
but even more tricky fitting it as 95% chance of it snapping or cracking
can get a replacement from beedspeed that comes in two parts

side panel levers
quite easy two philips screws on each side remover the plastic collar that goes through the frame (if fitted) and just move it about will find its own way
the one on the engine side is a bit more tricky due to the choke set up etc
you may have a plastic cover under the tank that covers the wiring/cables etc

Oil tank removal
remove the bolts
remove the grommets at the petrol tap lever
can either take the fuel and oil pipe off at the engine and push them through
or once the tank is unbolted lift it up and can remove the fuel and oil pipe from the tanks itself if doing it this way push all the excess pipe through from the engine side to inside of the fram the oil can pull of the oil injection feed pipe and plug it with a shouldered bolt otr similar

front disk brake
best to do this one you have the top head set off horncover etc
take the resovoir cap op the brake master cylinder and syringe the fluid out
OR
take the banjo bolt of the caliper at the bottom noting the two copper washers put the end of the pipe in a SMALL freezer bag and tie wrap it closed so it catches the fluid can leave this for a while or just use the front brake lever to expell the fluid out

need to unbolt the metal end from the master cylinder and make sure you have a good size spanner or an actuall brake spanner unbolt the bolt and retainer on the front mudguard
should be a plastic clip on the steering column at the horn cover can prise this out using a flat screw driver

the brake line is fiddely to remove if remeber right easier to remove it via the top due to the 90 degrre bend at the master cylinder end

when stripping it down when taking things off bag the bolts /screw clips etc in to small bags likes of freezer bags etc and write on them what they are for likes of one bag for the toolbox fiiting ,another bag for the front brake assembly
etc as makes life a lot easier wiring as well write this down on a bit of paper or a psotit note which wire goes on which terminal on relays inline fuse etc

when you get the scooter back from painting have a tap and die set at you dispossal so you can re-tap threads especially on the headset for mounting the front brake resovoir elctric start mounts etc as if force it with the correct bolt or screw will either strip the threaded hole/shear the bolt or worse so good luck

thanks for that.
Thought the legshield trim would be the trickiest. I had right drama when I rebuilt my Sprint, nearly took all the paint off!

Hi all

how do the switches on the handlebars disconnect? Can't see how to get the circuit board out of the housing?

Cheers
