Oil Leak

Postby Graham on Mon Dec 10, 2007 2:28 pm

Hi Everybody, first time in the big pool, not being overblest with machanical ability.
How easy or dificult is it to remove the petrol and oil tank on a PX200 to cure an oil leak which I can Only presume is from the oil tank as it is the same colour coming out onto the exhaust box/back floor board as going in the tank.

Thanks
Graham

Pretty easy, and one of the jobs i hate doing.

1. remove seat
2. remove oil and petrol pipe from carb. Drain petrol.
3. undo fuel sender wires from tank - either from tank or conection just below the hole the wires go through.
4. pull out petrol tap gromit.
5. un bolt tank and lift out, give the fuel lines a push into the body to help the tank come up, and watch for the petrol tap comeing through the frame.
Tanks should come out easy.
Hopefully its just the oil pipe, but i have had the oil tanks split before.
Also to access the nut that holds the oil tank on you need a very long socket bar down the filler tube, you will have to drain the oil to fix this.
Refitting is just the reverse. make sure your fuel line dioesn't get kinked around the petrol tap rod, bit of a pain to get the petrol tap rod back into the hole, i usually turn it to the off position, sometimes helps.

Another fairly common cause is a cracked site glass on the oil tank.

You can replace that once you have lifted the tank up, no need to disconnect the sender wires, petrol pipe or split the oil tank from the fuel tank, just drain the oil and disconnect the oil feed to the carb, you can lift the tank out far enough to access the site glass (you may need to twist the oil tank a little) which just screws off. New ones only about £5, have fun  .

I usually push some thick fishing line or thin string through the petrol tap hole from the outside then pull it up through, tie it onto the end of the petrol tap rod & put the tap in an upright position, then gently lower the tank whilst pulling on the line, works for me every time!

My boy stood on my view glass when sitting on my scoot. He cracked it and it leaked.
I replaced it by unscrewing the old one without the need for lifting the petrol tank out.
I just unscrewed the old one, took out the rubber seal. Skrewed in the new one, replaced the rubber gromit, had a small problem tightening the view glass enough, just placed a cloth over the view glass and used some plyers, gentley tightening. Also replacing the rubber seal, you have to use a small skrewdriver to prise it into place gently.
Saves all the hassle of lifting the petrol tank, reaching in to do the job from an almost impossible angle.

I did this job for a mate the other week, unfortunatly his glass was smashed to the point where there was nothing to get hold of to unscrew it from the front, 8loody kids  ..

..didn't think it actually fitted through the hole, but thats handy to know for next time

I must admit i didnt think it would as my brother had the same problem and took it to our friendly scooter mechanic, because he didnt fancy lifting tank ect, also the fact hes got five thumbs for fingers, lol.
Friendly mechanic lifts tank ect.
When it came for me to do mine, i thought " wonder if i can get old one off before undoing tank" mmm done. "Wonder if new one will fit through hole, might be able to do it without lifting tank" He he he done it, mmm now the gromit/seal, he he done it, easy peasy.

And i only have 3 thumbs.
