My first Vespa Is it a good price..

Postby ChadchadElvis on Fri Jul 25, 2008 11:37 am

Hi All,

I'm just after a bit of help and guidance. I'm about to buy my first vespa.. It's a 1978 PX200 pretty original condition comes with mot, tax, back rack etc.... It's trade and is £1595.... It's far from immaculate and just as far from being a heap, it's totally rideable etc...

Is that an ok price? I appreciate it's trade and not private, but sometimes I'm willing to pay a couple of quid more for that extra piece of mind...

Cheers....

P.s. If you read this Mr Sales man... absolutely no disrespect, I just need to confirm that I'm doing the right thing...

Very hard to judge without seeing it, scooter prices vary so much on condition, P200 anywhere from £500 - £2k, as ever negotiate to the point where you are happy, end of the day it's worth what someone is willing to pay...

Good luck with the purchase!

Thanks BrynO..

I figured it would be something like this... I'll just role with it... The dealer seems fairly reputable....

Get yourself a copy of Scootering magazine and look through the for sale section. It'll give you an idea of price ranges.

Cool cool.. What condition is your 1986 p2? Should my 78 be more or less?

I know of a p2 on a G plate at less than a grand locally.

I think your paying well over the odds there, its a buyers market and its all well and good saying peace of mind but what exactly are they offering?

12 months mot?
taxed?
any warranty?
are they local?
do they actually deal in vespas / geared scoots?

Seems like a lot to me, although mk1 P2s have a good reputation, and might become more desirable than later EFL etc.. soon (if in good condition, cosmetically, and mechanically). In any case, if you mean a dealer by "trade", don't expect to get a great deal unless you're dealing with a sportsbike place where they're desperate to get rid of if. If it's a Vespa dealership, paying more for the peace of mind associated with a warranty, MOT etc.. is fine, and to be expected. If you want a good deal, I'd say hit the private sellers, and be suspicious of anyone looking like a wheelie king.

It sounds a lot to me, you can have my PX200Disc for that. Year 2002. I would also throw in a front rack and three in one back rack.
It all depends on what you are looking for i suppose.
What dealer is it?

Good luck with it.

I have just payed £1450 for a 1979 p150x, (it is in mint condition) and i know i have payed OVER todays market price, but i have also payed for sentiment, because its the same year and colour as the my previous vespas, and getting hard to find. If you have no fixed ideas about colour age and spec you can certainly pick a tidy 200 for less than £1600.
