Gear selector Cruciform

Postby Rukas on Fri Nov 28, 2008 12:18 pm

Morning

Got a Vespa PK125s that clunks into first gear and jumps out of second. Been told its the gear selector cruciform.

Normally have an attempt myself but haven't got the time so rang Midland Scooter Centre and got quoted around £200 for labour and parts.

Does anyone know anywhere else to get a quote from in Nottingham? If not is this a good quote compared to other places in the UK.

Cheers.

pk's/small frames dont have a cruciform, they have a proper spider selector mechanism a bit like lambrettas, not prone to failure as far as i know like cruciforms are in early px's. However if it is that and not just cable adjustment or something daft like that then 200 isnt bad, labour must be 40-50/hour i'd have thought and it would involve motor removal, strip and rebuild.

He said it would be cheaper if you remove the engine yourself then bring it down which is probably the better option for me. Try and save as much as I can.

Tried the cable already so looks like I'm going to have to get it booked in. Although might have to wait until after xmas unless MSC do vouchers then looks like I know what my family will be getting me.

Its not a bad price still considering the labour involved ,but i'd still get a second opinion on what the problem is from a local scooterist in the know if you know any, or actually ride to the shop and ask them if they would diagnose the fault before you start taking the motor out just in case, thats if they have only diagnosed it over the phone. :)

Don't suppose anyone knows where I can get a Haynes Manual for A PK125s?

Had a look and can't seem to find one. Going to book a couple of days off and have a pop myself.

The Haynes manual doesn't cover the V range motor so not really any good to ya....

The gear dogs are prone to wear like any gear dog P or V range.... but normally its a gearbox shimming issue that can cause more problems. Either way it a full engine strip to fix, need a few special tools to do the job Flywheel puller and clutch puller all other tools are sockets or spanners. parts wise i would say £60-70 plus the tools if you ain't got them.

It really isn't that hard, V range motors are easy to work on even in the frame.

I wounldn't like to say how long it would take me to do this job.....
