the best parts were sitting round the bar talking and the rideout. the format for a VCB Rally should really be based on this?

I also remember attending a VCB rally quite a few years ago in the early 80s When we arrived we (in our teenage ignorance) were a bit surprised to find the place full of older people that were not particularly warm or friendly and viewed us with suspicion.
We were full on scooterboys at the time (combats docs silly haircuts) but riding Vespas never the less. The whole thing had the feel of a country fete to it and after looking around for a couple of hours we left as it was obvous we werent particullarly wanted. After this experience, i still continued to ride and love Vespas but didnt want to really associate with the Vespa club as i just didnt think it was "my kinda club" i have been out of the UK for a while and things may have changed by now.
